« In 1995, Breitling struck a decisive blow in launching the first wristwatch with a built-in emergency microtransmitter. Operating on the 121.5 MHz international air distress frequency, this first Emergency was designed to enable accurate homing in on pilots or passengers following a plane crash. It was designed for constant wear on the wrist and thus as a complement to the standard onboard aircraft equipment. The first Emergency has been tested and worn in daily use by the finest aviation professionals and the world’s greatest aeronautical teams. It has proven its worth in many search and rescue exercises and has become synonymous with safety and reliability for pilots around the globe. Breitling has reaffirmed its pioneering role in the field of technical watches and instruments for professionals by creating the very first wristwatch with a personal survival instrument. The “watch” and “transmitter” parts have been designed as two distinct elements, totally independent in terms of both operation and energy source and thus ensuring enhanced security. The present model is an oversized, water-resistant, 18K yellow gold aviator’s quartz chronometer wristwatch with digital display for the chronograph, perpetual calendar with date, day, month and year, world time indication, alarm and analog display for the time, micro antenna with aviation emergency frequency.
The Emergency I model, such as the present watch, has a four-body contruction: a large and solid 18K gold tonneau shaped « cradle » with micro antennas between the lugs at 12 and 6, test button on the back to test the emergency signal, holding the electronic system for detress signal, that secured by four long steel screws the round gold watch case bearing the gold bi-directionnal rotating bezel and sapphire crystal. Under the flat sapphire crystal, we find a mint blue dial with luminous hands, two apertures at 12 and 6 for the digital displays, an outer ring with painted luminous 5-minute indexes. The watch is powered by a Breitling caliber 68, quartz, 7 jewels, based Eta 958.332, certified chronometer. Dial, case and movement are signed. The model is no more in production, replaced by the Emergency II in 2013.
The present watch comes with a Breitling strap as well as an 18K yellow gold Breitling deployant clasp. The size between the lugs is 22mm.
