BREITLING, CO-PILOT, 765 AVI, « RAQUEL WELSH », 1960s
ICONEEK price: 14’000.- CHF
Iconeek is proud to introduce here a very attractive, rare and large stainless steel chronograph wristwatch with black dial and oversized 15-minutes register, the Breitling 765 AVI.
In 1953, the Breitling Watch Company launched the first reference 765 AVI (AVI for Aviation): a large pilot chronograph with a 12H rotating steel bezel. The first model was featuring a digital 15 minutes counter at 3 o’clock and is known as the « 765 Digital ». This counter design was later replaced by a larger 15 minutes register with oversized luminous markers placed at 3 minute increments, such as the present watch. In 1965, Breitling launched the 765 CP (Co-Pilot), an evolution of the 765 AVI, with the same case size 41 mm., but different dials and bezel.
The model has gained an iconic status when actress Raquel Welsh was wearing it in its role of Fathom Harvill, a secret agent, in the movie « Fathom » (1967). The model was furthemore worn by the famous Swiss alpine ski racer and olympic champion: Jean-Claude Killy. The model was photographed on Killy’s wrist after he won all three gold medals in alpine skiing at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France.
The model comes with a three-body construction: a large steel tonneau-shaped case with round chronograph pushers, a bi-directionnal rotating steel bezel, a screwed case back. The case back is engraved inside « 974249 » & « Breitling Watch Ltd Swiss ». The case back is engraved outside « BREITLING AVI 765 & ANTIMAGNETIC STAINLESS-STEEL WATERPROOF SHOCKPROTECTED ».
Under the plexi glass, we find a matte black dial, painted arabic 12 and luminous 5-minute baton indexes, outer minute and 1/5th second division, luminous hands, three subsidiary silvered dials for the 12-hour register at 6, the small second at 9, the 15-minute register at 3. Inside ticks a caliber Venus 178, mechanical, hand wound, with pink finish, 17 jewels, shock-absorbers, two-arm monometallic balance with timing screws, self-compensating Breguet balance spring, index regulator, column-wheel chronograph mechanism.
The chronograph bridge is engraved « Breitling, seventeen 17 jewels ». The balance bridge is engraved « WOG » , the US import code for Walkmann Watch Co and Breitling companies. The size between the lugs is 22 mm. Dial, case and movement are signed.
A great and iconic vintage chronograph ! as well as a superb daily wear!
